For heating engineers
The call you cannot answer is the job you do not get.
It is the first properly cold week of the year and you are on your fifth breakdown of the day. The phone rings while you are bleeding a system, and it rings again while you are on the first call, and there is genuinely no version of the day where you get to all of them.
Why it costs heating engineers more
They are not shopping around. They are picking whoever answers.
Heating work is brutally seasonal. The fortnight where everybody’s boiler fails is the fortnight you physically cannot answer the phone, and it is also the fortnight worth the most — the calls you drop in November are a meaningful share of the year, and every one of them will ring somebody else within the hour.
14% of calls to a home-services business go unanswered
CallRail — 1.1 million leads analysed in January 2025. Healthcare missed 32%, legal 28%, home services 14%, real estate 9%.

The question heating engineers ask first
In a cold snap I am already fully booked. Why would I want more calls?
So they end up in next week rather than at a competitor. A caller who gets a text with your real availability books the first slot you actually have — which keeps the work and stops you spending the evening ringing back people who have already sorted it. Being full is a scheduling problem, not a reason to lose the customer.
