Why it costs roofers more
They are not shopping around. They are picking whoever answers.
Roofing enquiries arrive in weather. A gale on Tuesday night means every roofer in the county is being rung on Wednesday morning by people who have water coming in — and they ring down the list until somebody picks up, because a hole in a roof does not wait for a call back. The week you cannot answer the phone is the week the phone is worth the most, which is the same trap heating engineers are in and for the same reason.

The question roofers ask first
I cannot quote a roof from a text message.
Nobody is asking you to. What gets booked is you standing in their driveway with a pair of binoculars, which is what was always going to happen first. The difference is that the appointment is made while they are still frightened about the ceiling, instead of after the third roofer they rang has already been round.
